Cuckmere Haven 3

Here's a view from the hill leading west out of Cuckmere Haven. If you havent ever seen the 'meander' of the River Cuckmere here, it's brilliant. If you have a spare hour or so, park opposite the visitor centre and walk down towards the sea. It's a beautiful walk at any time of the year.

Beachy Head

The weather this weekend was fantastic. On Saturday we walked up towards Beachy Head from Whitbread Hollow. Occasionally the sea near here takes on an almost Carribbean blue/green. This is an abstract study looking down towards to shoreline. The lighthouse is just out of view.

Eastbourne Pier 3

Here's a nightime picture of Eastbourne Pier from the promenade on the east side. I haven't seen many night paintings of the pier but it looks spectacular from all angles in all seasons.

Near East Dean 2

I spent quite a bit of time in and around East Dean before and during this years OpenArt festival in August and have some good memories of the place and the people I met there. This is a tree just past the last house on the right as you drive towards the sea at Birling Gap.SOLD 11.4.09

Between the sea and the beach

I wonder how many stories there are about incidents and experiences that occur in that special place between the sea and the beach. It appears regularly but is different each time it does and is constantly changing in size, shape and texture. This is near the pier at Eastbourne, early morning. SOLD

Downland near Alciston

This is a view from the A27 just past the turning for the Cricketers pub (looking south). 35 years a ago I spent a pleasant week near here with my fellow students from Eastbourne Art College and tutors Alison Smith and Trevor Kemp. We spent the week drawing in a nearby farmyard and in the surounding country lanes which, actually, are pretty much unchanged over all those years.

Near Exceat 2

Here is a another view from the car park at The Golden Galleon at Exceat Bridge, Cuckmere Haven looking East. It's really starting to get chilly now, particularly in the evenings. The weekend was beautiful though with plenty of bright sunshine. SOLD

Green Downs

Heres another 'graphic' view of the downs near Wilmington showing a gate in the foreground with the downland and skyline behind. Am starting to get ready for The Brighton Art Fair that starts this Friday. Come along and see all unsold 'daily' paintings. SOLD

My favourite road 10

I haven't produced any paintings from my favourite road for a couple of weeks. It's all been mainly piers and seascapes. So here we are again - a view from the winding road near Ditchling Beacon looking west. NFS

Purple Pier

Another view of the pier looking west. In Eastbourne the East West divide happens pretty much at the Pier. I found out recently that this divide that seems present in most urban conurbations has it's roots in factories and mills being built in the east of the towns. Noxious gasses and smoke would then blow away from the dwellings of the factory owners and their families. Does that sound about right? SOLD

Orange Pier

Another view of Eastbourne Pier, this time less representational. I'm very keen to let the change in temperature reflect in the colours I use when painting. Instinctively I'm using darker tones and colours over the past few days. I'm sure that will all change as the autumn (then winter) kicks in! SOLD

Downland study 2

SOLD Using the same palette as yesterday, here's another downland study. This time it's a view just outside Ringmer on the way to Lewes. There's definitely a chill in the air over the past few days and the paintings are instinctively becoming more autumnal.

Charleston Farmhouse

This is a view near Charleston Farmhouse (near Lewes) For those that haven't been here It's definitely worth a visit.
Charleston was the home and country meeting place for the writers, painters and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group. The interior was painted by the artists Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell, and together with their collection forms a unique example of their decorative style. The house is open to visitors. See website for opening times, directions etc. www.charleston.org.uk SOLD

Eastbourne Pier 2

The pier is always an inspiration and looks different according to the light, time of day and weather conditions. Here's a study of the supporting struts underneath (which have always fascinated me). SOLD

Seafront detail

On Eastbourne seafront there are a number af shelters of varying size and design. Some of the best ones (architecturaly) are near the bandstand. They have beautiful Deco detailing, but sadly some are crumbling and rather than being replaced are just being removed. SOLD

Downland study

Every so often the daily paintings become looser and more abstract. This is a study of the view from Eastbourne seafront opposite the Grand Hotel looking towards the downs. SOLD

Palms near the Wish Tower, Eastbourne

There are some fantastic palms and other exotic plants on Eastbourne seafront. This is near the road just by the Wish Tower. It was an interesting weekend weather wise. Really sunny on Saturday, really bleak on Sunday (but actually it all came good in the afternoon) The days are starting to get a little chilly: a sign of Autumn just around the corner. SOLD
